MOMENTS OF NOISE is that rare recording deserving of a short review In a single word, burning. In two words, fiery intensity. In three words, surgcally tight playing. Four words, listen to this recording! (End of review.) The Robert Bachner Big Band was formed in 2005 as a vehicle to allow Bachner's music to be well-rehearsed and more frequently performed. Ac Paul Compton says in the liner notes, "MOMENTS OF NOISE ic a perfect blend of cutting-edge onginality and respect for tradition." Bachner's trombone playing is excellent, with a standout track being The Way You Look Tonight. This cut begins with a lyric Statement of the head that quickly dives into an intense double-time run through the changes. Section features are so clean that they bring to mind the group Supersax, showcasing flawless trumpet, trombone, and saxophone lines. Listeners familiar with recordings of Rob McConnell's Boss Brass are sure to find only the best similanties with this CD: at all times the playing is in the pocket, recording quality is crystal clear, dynamic contrasts pack a punch, and as a bonus, the playing captured in the studio is full of energy and life. Not only does MOMENTS OF NOISE deserve a short and positive review, it merits a home in the CD players of discriminating big-band aficionados. Donn Schaefer University of Utah
